Blessed Columbia Marmion

Words of Bl. Columbia

“CHARITY is a much more important virtue, and more agreeable to God, than austerity.”

“Wouldn’t it indeed be a failure of respect to neglect the divine Guest who awaits us in the tabernacle? He dwells there, really present, He who was present in the crib, at Nazareth, upon the mountains of Judea, at the Last Supper, upon the cross. He is there, the same Christ who healed the lepers, stilled the tempest, and promised to the good thief a place in His kingdom. We find there our Savior, our Friend, our elder Brother, in the fullness of His almighty power, in the ever-fruitful virtue of His mysteries, the infinite superabundance of His merits, and the ineffable mercy of His love.”

“No one can say: Holiness is not for me. God wills us to be saints for His glory and our joy. God does not mock us. When God says to us, “Be perfect,” He knows all that He is asking of us, yet at the same time He requires nothing beyond our power, when we rely on His grace.”

“When we consider the Mysteries of the life of Jesus, which of His perfections do we see especially shine out? It is LOVE.”

October 3 is the memorial of Blessed Columbia Marmion (1858-1923).
Born in Ireland, Joseph Marmion studied in Rome and was ordained in 1881. On his way back to Ireland, he discovered and felt drawn to the Benedictine Abbey of Maredsous (Belgium). After several years of diocesan ministry, Joseph entered the Abbey in 1886, received the name “Columba,” and made his solemn profession on February 10, 1891.
Fr. Columba was among the founding monks of the Abbey of Mont César (Louvain, Belgium). As time went on, he preached many retreats in Belgium and the United Kingdom; and he also gave spiritual direction to many religious communities. In 1909 he was elected the 3rd Abbot of Maredsous Abbey and received the abbatial blessing on October 3 (now his feastday). Even with his increased monastic duties, he continued to preach retreats, and give spiritual direction. Abbot Columba wrote several books which are spiritual classics: Christ the Life of the Soul (1917), Christ in His Mysteries (1919), and Christ the Ideal of the Monk (1922). (After his death, Union With God: Letters of Spiritual Direction was published.) His preaching writing, and spiritual advice were wise, rich, and profound. Abbot Columba died on January 30, 1923 of influenza, and he was beatified in 2000 by Pope John Paul II (who, incidentally, was fond of Bl. Columba’s writings). Bl. Columba Marmion, pray for us!
